How should one deal with asbestos contamination in fabrics and carpets?

If asbestos-containing materials (ACM) have been released onto carpeted areas, it may not always be possible to clean them adequately. However, "steam" cleaning and HEPA vacuuming methods are sometimes employed for this purpose. It's important to note that workers engaged in cleaning asbestos-fiber-contaminated carpets should wear proper respiratory protection.

Depending on the extent of contamination and the overall asbestos control strategy in the building, it may be more cost-effective to properly dispose of contaminated carpets and other fabrics as asbestos-containing waste. This is especially true if a permanent asbestos control option is being undertaken.
